This picture is regarded as the very first purposeful portrait of a person that has ever been created. Robert Cornelius, an American who works in metal polishing and silver plating, is the subject and the photographer.

The Brownie itself was a tremendous improvement since it gave customers a convenient and economical alternative to the big, heavy plate cameras.
