Union Home Minister Amit Shah announced in the Lok Sabha that the new criminal laws include death penalty provisions for mob lynching. The three criminal laws, Bharatiya Nyaya (Second) Sanhita, Bharatiya Nagarik Suraksha (Second) Sanhita, and Bharatiya Sakshya (Second) Bill, were passed by the Lok Sabha. The Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita specifically addresses mob lynching, treating it as an offense with life imprisonment or death penalty based on factors like race, caste, sex, language, or personal belief. Shah criticized the Congress, questioning why they didn’t address mob lynching during their 58 years in power. He responded to P Chidambaram’s earlier challenge and emphasized BJP’s commitment to national development. Shah took jabs at the Congress’s “double standards” and claimed they faced issues due to this. Amidst the ongoing Winter Session, where 143 MPs were suspended for “misconduct,” the Opposition demanded a statement on the Parliament security breach, prompting Shah’s remarks on understanding Indian laws. The Union Home Minister’s statement coincided with heightened parliamentary tensions and showcased the government’s stance on addressing mob lynching through stringent legal measures.
