A fertiliser manufacturing unit in north Chennai’s Ennore became the epicenter of a crisis as at least 25 individuals were hospitalized due to an ammonia gas leak on Tuesday night. The incident at Coromandel International Limited triggered an unpleasant odor, affecting residents in areas like Periya Kuppam. Complaints of discomfort, nausea, and faintness led to over 25 people being rushed to nearby hospitals. The Tamil Nadu Environment and Forest Department confirmed the ammonia leak in a sub-sea pipe, causing a strong smell. Coromandel International Limited’s President, Amir Alvi, stated that the leak occurred during routine operations but was swiftly addressed through the activation of Standard Operating Procedures. Local residents panicked, evacuating their homes as officials from the fertiliser unit worked to resolve the technical issue.
Despite assurances from police officers and officials that the situation was under control, the public remained on edge. The forest department received notice of the leak during the pipeline’s pre-cooling operation at 12.45 am. Emergency response teams, including environmental engineers and safety authorities, were promptly dispatched to the scene. The unit successfully depressurized the pipeline within 20 minutes, diverting ammonia vapor to the flare. The incident prompted concerns about safety standards, but Coromandel International Limited emphasized adherence to the highest safety protocols.
As investigations continue, authorities are expected to scrutinize the circumstances surrounding the gas leak, ensuring accountability and preventative measures to avert such incidents in the future. The community’s well-being, environmental impact, and the plant’s safety protocols will likely be central to ongoing discussions.
