According to the most recent National Crime Records Bureau (NCRB) statistics, Bihar has the highest incidence of vehicle accidents near holy institutions in India, with 2,995 fatalities in 2022. In addition, there was a 13.1% rise in total traffic accidents in the state over the year before. With 2,258 deaths (1,791 men and 467 women) from traffic accidents close to places of worship in rural Bihar in 2022, the state had the highest number of such incidents nationwide. The state’s urban areas also reported 737 deaths—536 men and 201 women—near religious sites, making it the deadliest state in the nation once more.
In Bihar, vehicle accidents in 2022 caused 7,068 injuries and 8,898 deaths total. 5,6% of all accidents resulted in overspeeding, which claimed 4,868 lives. Dangerous and irresponsible driving was responsible for 34.7% of instances. An alcohol-related driving accident resulted in forty-three fatalities. The research also showed that in Bihar, Mizoram, Jharkhand, Punjab, and Uttar Pradesh, there were more traffic accidents that resulted in deaths than injuries. The majority of fatalities were reported on highways, including both state and national routes.
Plans to create a specialized highway patrol force along national highways in order to lower accident rates and improve overall safety measures are among Bihar’s activities to address the problems associated with road safety. These results highlight the necessity of concentrated efforts and comprehensive strategies to raise road safety in Bihar, including issues like speeding, careless driving, and drunk driving.
