The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) reprimanded actor and MP Kangana Ranaut on Monday for her controversial remarks linking the recent farmers’ protest to unrest in Bangladesh. Ranaut’s comments, made in a video shared on her X handle, suggested that the farmers’ protests could have led to a Bangladesh-like situation if not for the Modi government’s actions. She claimed that outside forces, with the help of insiders, were attempting to destabilize India and praised the government’s foresight in preventing such a scenario. The BJP swiftly distanced itself from Ranaut’s statements. In a statement, the party clarified that Ranaut’s remarks did not reflect its stance. “BJP MP Ms. Kangana Ranaut’s statement on the farmers’ protest is not the party’s stand. The Bharatiya Janata Party disagrees with her remarks and has directed her not to issue such statements in the future,” the party said. The BJP emphasized its commitment to social harmony under its motto of “Sabka Saath, Sabka Vikas, Sabka Vishwas Aur Sabka Prayaas.” This is not the first time Ranaut has faced backlash over her comments on the farmers’ protests that took place in 2020-21 against the now-repealed farm laws. During the protest, she mistakenly identified an elderly woman as Bilkis Bano, a prominent figure from the Shaheen Bagh protests, and disparaged her participation. Additionally, shortly after her election as an MP from Himachal Pradesh’s Mandi, Ranaut was reportedly slapped by a CISF personnel at Chandigarh airport, which added to her controversies. The BJP’s swift action reflects its efforts to manage and distance itself from the contentious remarks made by its members and affiliates.
