New Delhi announced on Monday that India and China have reached a significant agreement on patrolling arrangements along the Line of Actual Control (LAC), the de-facto border between the two nations. This development follows ongoing discussions aimed at resolving tensions that have persisted since the aggressive activities initiated by China in Ladakh in 2020.
China’s Foreign Ministry confirmed the agreement on Tuesday, with spokesperson Lin Jian stating that both countries have maintained close communication through diplomatic and military channels. “In recent times, China and India have maintained close communication on relevant issues on the China-India border,” Lin said, adding that both sides have reached a solution to the relevant issues, which China positively evaluates. He further noted that China is committed to working with India to implement the agreed solution.
Indian Foreign Secretary Vikram Misri highlighted the importance of recent discussions held through the Working Mechanism for Consultation and Coordination (WMCC) and various military-level meetings. He emphasized that these discussions have historically led to the resolution of standoffs at various locations along the border. Misri stated, “Now, as a result of the discussions that have taken place over the last several weeks, an agreement has been arrived at on patrolling arrangements along the Line of Actual Control in the India-China border areas.”
This agreement is expected to pave the way for dis-engagement and ultimately resolve the issues that arose in 2020. The agreement signifies a positive step toward de-escalation and a more stable relationship between the two neighboring countries. As both sides work to implement the new arrangements, the international community will be watching closely for further developments in the region.
