Employees at the Chinese supermarket chain Fat Dong Lai now have the option to take up to 10 days of “sad leave” each year without needing approval from managers. This unique benefit is designed to address feelings of sadness or burnout and promote a healthier work-life balance among staff.
The founder of Fat Dong Lai, Mr. Yu Dong Lai, explained that everyone experiences moments of sadness, and it’s essential to recognize and support employees during these times. The company, which started with one store in 1995 and has since grown to 12 outlets in Henan province, aims to create a caring and understanding work environment for its employees.
Dubbed the “Haidilao of supermarkets,” Fat Dong Lai is known for its exceptional customer service, offering services such as blood pressure checks, handbag care, and even pet feeding stations. Similar to Haidilao, famous for its customer-centric approach and unique perks like manicures and shoe shines, Fat Dong Lai strives to provide a luxurious and unexpected experience for its customers.
Mr. Yu emphasized the positive impact of “sad leave,” noting that employees often feel happier and more supported by the company after taking this time off. He shared these insights during a supermarket convention in Henan province, highlighting the importance of work-life balance and understanding in the workplace.
Employees at Fat Dong Lai have the flexibility to plan their “sad leave” according to their needs, as reported by the Straits Times. In addition to this innovative benefit, workers enjoy up to 40 days of annual leave, with the company closing for five days during the Chinese New Year period. This contrasts with the demanding “996” work culture prevalent in some Chinese companies, where employees work from 9 am to 9 pm, six days a week.
Fat Dong Lai’s commitment to its workforce goes beyond vacation time. The company promotes a supportive work environment with standard workdays of seven hours, five days a week. Furthermore, employees receive compensation of up to 5,000 yuan (S$950) for on-the-job grievances, such as customer insults or threats.
In a recent headline-making announcement, Fat Dong Lai revealed plans to send all employees on overseas vacations, with management traveling to Europe and other staff members visiting Japan. These initiatives underscore Fat Dong Lai’s reputation as a leader in prioritizing employee well-being and fostering a positive workplace culture.
