According to Twitter co-founder Jack Dorsey, Twitter received multiple requests from India to remove accounts associated with Farmers’ Protests and those criticising the government.
Dorsey mentioned that India has placed pressure on Twitter by threatening to shut off the service nationwide, raiding the residences of staff, and closing Twitter offices as a result of their defiance. Dorsey stressed that this behaviour was occurring in an advanced democracy like India.
‘We would raid the homes of your employees’, which they did; ‘we will shut down your offices if you don’t follow suit’. And this is India, a democratic nation,” Dorsey stated in reference to the ‘pressure’ coming from India.
In order for the audience to understand how it felt when some of the “most powerful people” on the planet approached him and demanded things from the company, Dorsey was asked to share some examples of pressure from foreign countries.
According to Dorsey, Turkey behaved similarly to India. He noted that Twitter, which frequently engaged in legal battles with the government and prevailed, was also threatened with closure by the Turkish government.
In November 2021, Prime Minister Narendra Modi made an important announcement by scrapping three divisive farm laws. Following a year-long protest by thousands of farmers who had been camped out at Delhi border crossings since November 2020, this decision was made.
Modi pleaded with the farmers to halt their protest after admitting his failure to persuade them. The three legislation were subsequently withdrawn during the winter session of Parliament.
In an interview with the YouTube channel Breaking Points, Dorsey made the assertion that has garnered notice. The opposition used Twitter to share a videotape of Dorsey’s statement and slam the Modi administration, despite the fact that the government has not yet reacted to his claim.
