Jammu and Kashmir is gearing up for the first phase of its assembly elections, set to commence on Wednesday, September 14. This marks the first time in a decade that assembly elections will be held in seven districts across both sides of the Pir Panjal mountain range. The election will see voting in 24 constituencies spread over seven districts, with polls opening at 7 am and closing at 6 pm.
A total of approximately 23.27 lakh voters are expected to participate, including 5.66 lakh first-time voters. They will have the opportunity to choose from 219 candidates, including 90 independents, vying for 24 assembly seats. The constituencies are divided with eight seats in three districts of the Jammu region and 16 seats in four districts of the Kashmir Valley.
This assembly election is significant as it is the first since the abrogation of Article 370 in August 2019, which ended Jammu and Kashmir’s special status and led to its reorganization into two separate Union Territories. The upcoming polls are closely watched for their potential impact on the political landscape of the region.
To ensure a smooth and secure voting process, heightened security measures have been implemented at all polling stations. The authorities have also made arrangements to facilitate voting for elderly individuals, women, and those with disabilities.
Following the first phase of polling, the subsequent phases are scheduled for September 25 and October 1, with the final vote counting set for October 8. These elections are expected to play a crucial role in shaping the future governance and development of Jammu and Kashmir, reflecting the region’s evolving political dynamics.
