The father of the 31-year-old trainee doctor who was brutally raped and murdered at Kolkata’s RG Kar Medical College and Hospital has refused compensation offered for his daughter’s death, stating that accepting it would dishonor her memory. “I have turned down the compensation. It will hurt my daughter if I accept money as compensation for her death. I want justice,” he told ANI. The grieving father expressed his deep desire for justice, emphasizing that nothing less than strict punishment for the perpetrator will suffice.
He also extended his gratitude to those supporting his family during this difficult time, saying, “I consider everyone who is standing with us as my sons and daughters.” The father revealed that the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI), now handling the case, has assured him that the accused will be arrested swiftly and face the harshest punishment possible. The CBI took over the investigation following a directive from the Calcutta High Court, which transferred the case from the Kolkata Police.
Meanwhile, the political fallout continues as the Trinamool Congress (TMC) removed former MP Dr. Santanu Sen from his role as the party’s spokesperson. Dr. Sen had criticized the management of RG Kar Medical College and Hospital in the wake of the incident, which led to his ousting. In response, Sen reiterated his demand for strict action against those responsible for both the horrific crime and the subsequent vandalism at the hospital by unidentified men. He alleged that certain individuals within the state’s health department did not convey the true extent of the issues to Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee.
Despite his removal as spokesperson, Dr. Sen stated his continued loyalty to the TMC, asserting that he has always worked as a “soldier” for the party and will persist in doing so. The case has not only sparked widespread outrage but also raised questions about the state of law and order, and the administration’s handling of such heinous crimes.
