“Kuwait is in mourning as Emir Sheikh Nawaf al-Ahmad al-Jaber al-Sabah, aged 86, passes away. The announcement came from Sheikh Mohammed Abdullah al-Sabah, the minister of the emiri court, stating the nation’s sorrow and the start of a 40-day official mourning period with a three-day closure of government departments. Sheikh Meshaal al-Ahmad al-Jaber al-Sabah, the 83-year-old half-brother and crown prince, is named the new emir.
No cause of death was disclosed. Sheikh Nawaf, who took office in September 2020 after his half-brother Sheikh Sabah al-Ahmad al-Jaber al-Sabah’s death, had a long history of service. He was heir apparent since 2006 and served as defence minister during the 1990 Iraqi invasion, as well as handling challenges as interior minister.
Known for his modesty and a low profile, Sheikh Nawaf earned the moniker “emir of pardons” for his reconciliatory efforts, overseeing significant amnesties, prisoner releases, and citizenship grants. His leadership included opening up to the opposition, allowing diverse voices in parliament, and reducing the government’s role in selecting the speaker of the house.
Bader al-Saif, a history professor at Kuwait University, noted, “This is a very sad day for Kuwait. The sheikh has only done good for the country. His legacy will be remembered fondly.” Despite having the third-shortest era in Kuwaiti history, Sheikh Nawaf’s impact was notable. The circumstances surrounding his death remain undisclosed, leaving Kuwait to reflect on the legacy of a leader who navigated challenges, fostered reconciliation, and left a lasting imprint on the nation’s history.”
