On Monday, Home Minister Amit Shah announced the creation of five new districts in the Union Territory of Ladakh. The new districts—Zanskar, Drass, Sham, Nubra, and Changthang—are intended to improve administrative efficiency and ensure that governance benefits reach every corner of Ladakh. This initiative aligns with Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s vision to foster development and prosperity in the region. Shah highlighted that the Modi government is dedicated to creating ample opportunities for the people of Ladakh. The announcement comes amid heightened regional tensions. The Leh Apex Body (LAB) has planned a foot march from Leh to Delhi next month to press the Centre on their demands. The LAB and the Kargil Democratic Alliance (KDA) are advocating for statehood, the extension of the Constitution’s sixth schedule, an expedited recruitment process with a public service commission for Ladakh, and separate Lok Sabha seats for Leh and Kargil districts. The ongoing agitation, which has been active for the past four years, follows stalled dialogue between Ladakh’s representatives and the central government, which ended in March without significant progress. LAB co-chairman Chering Dorjey Lakruk announced that the march will start on September 1 and aims to reach Delhi by October 2, Gandhi Jayanti, with a minimum of 100 volunteers. Climate activist Sonam Wangchuk will also join the march. Lakruk emphasized the importance of this non-violent protest inspired by Mahatma Gandhi, aiming to draw attention to their justified and democratic demands and urge the central government to resume dialogue. The decision to march reflects ongoing frustration and a strong desire among Ladakhis for concrete governmental action and dialogue.
