Some cricket players find that the drama follows them wherever they go. Gautam Gambhir is one of these cricket players. The recipient of the Arjuna Award has frequently made headlines. The remaining 70% is based on his aggressiveness on the pitch, with 30% coming from his contribution to the game.
The 41-year-old player recently got into a nasty argument with Virat Kohli, which led to both of them receiving 100% of their match fees in fines from the IPL for violating the IPL Code of Conduct. Gautam Gambhir has expressed his rage on the pitch before. There have been several occurrences.
Here are seven instances where Gautam Gambhir lost his composure in a cricket stadium.
1. During the 2013 IPL, when Gautam Gambhir and Virat Kohli yelled at one another.
Gambhir and Kohli have a lengthy relationship. Back in the sixth IPL season, Gautam Gambhir subbed out Virat Kohli and went to the KKR huddle. When Kohli approached the group and spoke, Gambhir became enraged. At one point, they even charged at each other while hurling insults. Rajat Bhatia was required to intervene between the two men and defuse the situation.
2. When Gautam Gambhir demanded that the crowd be quiet.
LSG defeated RCB in the final ball of the 2023 IPL. However, nobody was talking about that. What made headlines was Gautam Gambhir motioning to the RCB fans to stay quiet by putting his fingers to his lips.
3.If the umpires had not intervened between Gambir and Kamran Akmal, things might have gotten violent.
Gambhir failed to catch a Saeed Ajmal delivery at the Asia Cup. When Kamran Akmal approached the umpire to request an out, the umpire declined. During the break for drinks, Gambhir approached Akmal and confronted him. Both players got into a fight, and things might have escalated violent if MS Dhoni and the on-field umpires hadn’t stepped in.
4. The argument between Manoj Tiwary and Gautam Gambhir.
During a Ranji Trophy game between Bengal and Delhi, Manoj Tiwary reportedly entered the batter’s box without a helmet. The Delhi players believed that his request for a helmet was an attempt to buy time. He was asked to meet Gambhir that evening. Tiwary advised him to resolve the issue now rather than delaying until nightfall. Gambhir shoved the umpire out of the way as he attempted to put out the flames.
5. ICC’s ban on Gambhir.
Gautam Gambir was excluded by the International Cricket Council (ICC) from a 2008 Sydney Test after he elbowed Shane Watson while making a run. Not only that. He also exchanged heated words with Watson. Following these earlier altercations, Watson also overdid his sarcasm. Gambhir finally had enough of it at that point and took matters into his own hands.
6. When Gambhir wasn’t pleased with an umpire’s judgement.
While representing KKR in 2013, Gambhir and umpire Siddharth Kaul got into a fight during a game against RCB. Gambhir was dissatisfied with Kaul’s no-ball judgement. The argument became so heated that the left-handed batsman received a fine for his actions.
7. How did we miss the Shahid Afridi and Gautam Gambhir incident?
The always-exciting India-Pakistan matchups got even more exciting thanks to Gautam Gambhir. Shahid Afridi bowled during Pakistan’s 2007 tour of India, and Gambhir hit a four. Gambhir scored on the following ball, and the two players slammed into each other on the pitch. After a contentious argument, the referee fined each player a portion of their match fees. Gambhir was later judged accountable for making inappropriate and intentional physical contact.
Gautam Gambhir should perhaps quit taking his name so seriously.
