A 38-year-old engineer, K. Shriniwas, allegedly jumped off the Atal Setu trans-harbour bridge in Mumbai on Wednesday afternoon, police reported. Authorities launched a search operation for him later in the evening. Shriniwas, a resident of Dombivli, was reportedly under significant stress due to financial issues.
According to police, Shriniwas parked his car on the Nhava Sheva end of the Mumbai Trans Harbour Link, also known as Atal Setu, around 12:30 p.m. and then jumped into the sea. His family revealed that he had left his home around 11:30 p.m. on Tuesday night and had spoken to his wife and four-year-old daughter on the phone just hours before taking this drastic step. They mentioned that he was grappling with severe financial problems.
The police further disclosed that Shriniwas had previously attempted suicide in 2023 by ingesting floor cleaner while working in Kuwait, highlighting the ongoing nature of his distress.
This tragic incident is not isolated. On March 20, a female doctor from Thane also committed suicide by jumping from the same bridge, underlining a worrying trend of individuals taking their lives at this location.
Local authorities have emphasized the importance of mental health awareness and support. They urge individuals experiencing stress or financial difficulties to seek help and speak to someone they trust. Helplines and professional mental health services are available to provide support in times of crisis.
As the search for Shriniwas continues, his family and community are left grappling with the profound loss and the urgent need for greater mental health support and financial assistance measures to prevent such tragedies in the future.
