On Tuesday, the farmers’ group Samyukta Kisan Morcha called for nationwide protests on June 1 in favour of the wrestlers who have been calling for the arrest of BJP MP and WFI leader Brij Bhushan Sharan Singh, who is accused of molesting female wrestlers.
According to a statement from the Samyukta Kisan Morcha, the nationwide agitation has been called for in order to “secure the democratic right of protest by the Indian wrestlers” and all other groups within society, as well as to “demand the arrest of BJP MP Brij Bhushan Sharan Singh.”
In order to organise protests across India, the Morcha announced it will work with forums for labour unions, women, youth, students, and all other groups, including intellectuals.
On June 5, the day a gathering of seers in Ayodhya is scheduled to endorse Singh, Samyukta Kisan Morcha will also hold demonstrations and burn effigies of the Wrestling Federation of India president.
The morcha also vehemently denounced the treatment of wrestlers on May 28, which was designated as “Mahila Samman Mahapanchayat” day for women wrestlers.
The wrestlers, who had been demanding the arrest of Singh at Jantar Mantar since April 23, were forcibly removed from the area on Sunday after attempting to march to the newly inaugurated Parliament building.
They were held and then released.
The wrestlers then declared that they would throw their medals into the Haridwar River as a protest and a call for Singh to be punished. But after farmer representatives asked for five days to address the conflict, the wrestlers abandoned their threat.
