On December 17, Prime Minister Narendra Modi unveiled the Surat Diamond Bourse, positioned to become the world’s largest and most advanced center for international diamond and jewelry business. This comprehensive global hub, encompassing 67 lakh square feet and costing ₹3400 crore, goes beyond being a trading center. It aims to facilitate the exchange of both rough and polished diamonds, emphasizing the jewelry business and underscoring Surat’s commitment to revolutionizing the diamond trade on the international stage.
Built on 35.54 acres of land, the Surat Diamond Bourse is poised to be a global center for rough and polished diamond trading. Simultaneously, the newly integrated terminal building at Surat Airport, constructed at a cost of ₹353 crore, is designed to manage 1,200 domestic and 600 international passengers hourly during peak hours, with the capacity potentially increased to 3,000.
PM Modi, hailing the new structure, remarked, “One more diamond has been added to Surat’s magnificence.” He highlighted the significance of the Surat diamond industry, currently providing employment to around 8 lakh people, with the new diamond bourse expected to create an additional 1.5 lakh jobs.
The dedication of the Surat Airport’s new terminal building to the people of Gujarat marked another milestone. PM Modi noted that the people of Surat, along with traders and businessmen, received two significant gifts on the same day. He emphasized that the Surat Airport has now attained the status of an International Airport, reflecting the government’s focus on enhancing airport infrastructure.
PM Modi linked these achievements to ‘Modi’s Guarantee,’ stating that the hardworking people of Surat have witnessed this guarantee turning into reality. The Surat Diamond Bourse serves as another example of this guarantee, showcasing the government’s commitment to fostering economic growth and infrastructure development in the region.
