Prime Minister Narendra Modi, during his visit to Lakshadweep, highlighted the substantial development undertaken in the region over the past decade. Addressing the public, he acknowledged historical neglect and outlined the challenges faced, including weak port infrastructure affecting vital sectors such as education, health, and fuel supply.
Modi assured the government’s commitment to addressing these issues and propelling Lakshadweep’s progress. Notably, he inaugurated an ice plant at Agatti, foreseeing enhanced seafood processing opportunities. He celebrated completed projects, including a new airport and facilities for fishermen, fostering seafood export and increasing fishermen’s income.
The PM expressed optimism about the ice plant’s impact and the initiation of tuna fish exports, showcasing the region’s potential. He highlighted the inauguration of a solar plant, an aviation fuel depot, and the government’s effort to provide tapped water connections to all houses on Agatti Island.
Emphasizing the commitment to holistic development, Modi chaired a review meeting on Lakshadweep’s progress. The Prime Minister also disclosed projects worth over Rs 1,150 crore, ranging from enhancing internet connectivity to inaugurating the Low Temperature Thermal Desalination plant and providing Functional Household Tap Connections.
The transformative Kochi-Lakshadweep Islands Submarine Optical Fiber Connection project, announced in 2020, was completed. Inaugurated by Modi, it promises a significant boost in internet speed, revolutionizing communication infrastructure for services like telemedicine, e-governance, and digital banking.
Other key initiatives include the Low Temperature Thermal Desalination plant producing clean drinking water, inauguration of solar power plants, and laying the foundation stone for health care facility renovation and model Anganwadi centers.
