Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Thursday said the alleged incident of two women being paraded naked in Manipur has shamed 140 crore Indians, asserting that law will act with its full might and no guilty will be spared.
“My heart is full of pain and anger,” he told reporters ahead of Parliament’s Monsoon Session, amid criticism by Opposition parties for not speaking on the ethnic violence in the northeast state although 77 days have passed and over 150 people have been killed.
The prime minister requested all chief ministers to further strengthen the law and order mechanism in their respective states, especially to protect women and to take the most stringent action, reported PTI.
“The law will act with its full might,” the PM said on the alleged incident of women being paraded naked in Manipur.
He also mentioned states like Rajasthan and Chhattisgarh while calling for boosting law and order, and protecting women.
“I want to assure the countrymen that no guilty will be spared. What has happened to these daughters of Manipur can never be forgiven,” he said.
Tension mounted in the hills of Manipur after a May 4 video surfaced on Wednesday showing two women from one of the warring communities being paraded naked by a few men from the other side.
Modi also asked parliamentarians to make full use of the session for extensive discussion on a host of bills which, he added, are in people’s interest.
The Congress on Thursday slammed the Centre after the May 4 video of two women being paraded naked in Manipur surfaced, with party president Mallikarjun Kharge accusing the Modi government of turning democracy into “mobocracy”.
He said that “humanity has died in Manipur” and asked Prime Minister Narendra Modi to speak about the ethnic violence-hit state in Parliament and tell the nation what happened.
On Wednesday, after an all-party meeting, senior Congress leader Jairam Ramesh had asserted that the Opposition’s demand for a discussion on the Manipur crisis during the session is “non-negotiable”.
The government plans to take up as many as 31 Bills during the session. Among these are The Government of National Capital Territory of Delhi (Amendment) Bill to replace the ordinance on services in Delhi, The Digital Personal Data Protection Bill, The Biological Diversity (Amendment) Bill, and The Forest (Conservation) Amendment Bill.
The Congress has declared that it will oppose all these Bills. The discussion on The Government of National Capital Territory of Delhi (Amendment) Bill is expected to raise heat in both the Houses, especially Rajya Sabha, where the Opposition is planning to make every effort to stall its passage.
The government will need the support of some non-NDA, non-Opposition parties to ensure that the Bill sails through.
