Amidst the controversy surrounding the Wrestling Federation of India (WFI), Congress leader Rahul Gandhi made an unexpected visit to an ‘akhara’ in Haryana’s Jhajjar district. Early in the morning, Gandhi reached the “Virender Akhara” in Chhara village, spending a couple of hours interacting with wrestlers, including Bajrang Punia. This visit comes at a time when WFI is under scrutiny. Wrestlers, including Vinesh Phogat, have returned awards, expressing dissatisfaction with the federation’s affairs. Phogat, a two-time World Championship medalist, returned her Khel Ratna and Arjuna awards, stating that such honors have lost meaning amid wrestlers’ struggles for justice.
During the impromptu visit, Gandhi observed the wrestlers’ daily routine, participated in exercises, and shared a meal with them. Wrestlers informed him about the mental stress they have endured. Notably, the WFI controversy revolves around allegations of sexual harassment against Brij Bhushan Singh Sharan, an associate of newly-elected WFI president Sanjay Singh.
Phogat, Punia, and Sakshi Malik had protested against Sharan earlier this year, accusing him of sexual harassment. The Sports Ministry suspended the newly-elected WFI and tasked the Indian Olympic Association (IOA) with forming an ad-hoc panel to manage the federation. The wrestlers’ return of awards and resignation from the sport underscored their dissatisfaction with the leadership.
In this context, Gandhi’s visit to the ‘akhara’ becomes significant, reflecting his interest in understanding the challenges faced by athletes and supporting their cause. His previous visits to interact with farmers and truck drivers indicate a pattern of engaging with grassroots issues. This approach aligns with his effort to connect with people at the ground level and gain insights into their concerns.
Gandhi’s presence at the ‘akhara’ not only addresses the immediate wrestling controversy but also emphasizes the need for improved governance and support systems in Indian sports. The WFI issue has broader implications for the integrity and well-being of athletes, making it a subject of national importance. As the matter continues to unfold, Gandhi’s on-the-ground engagements highlight a political leader’s commitment to understanding and addressing the challenges faced by various sections of society.
