Uber Launches Asia’s First Water Transport Service, Uber Shikara, in Kashmir’s Dal Lake
Uber has launched Uber Shikara, Asia’s first water transport service, in the picturesque Dal Lake in Srinagar, Kashmir. This innovative service blends tradition with technology, allowing users to book rides on the iconic shikaras—traditional wooden boats—through the Uber app. The initiative is part of Uber’s commitment to adapting its services to local cultures while promoting tourism.
Similar to water-based transport systems in cities like Venice, Uber Shikara offers a seamless experience for both tourists and locals. The service is designed to boost Kashmir’s tourism sector by making its famous shikara rides more accessible. In the initial phase, seven shikaras have been integrated into the platform, with plans to scale up depending on demand.
Lieutenant Governor Manoj Sinha praised the launch, highlighting its potential to enhance Kashmir’s cultural heritage while leveraging modern technology. He noted that the initiative underscores the region’s commitment to welcoming tourists and providing innovative experiences.
Dal Lake, often referred to as the “Jewel in the Crown of Kashmir,” is a major tourist attraction, and shikara rides are a quintessential part of the experience. By enabling app-based bookings, Uber aims to modernize the experience while preserving its charm.
This launch reflects a growing trend of technology-driven solutions tailored to local needs, bridging tradition and convenience. With its unique offering, Uber Shikara is poised to become a highlight of Kashmir’s tourism landscape.
