In response to reported offensive social media posts about Aurangzeb and Tipu Sultan inciting unrest in Maharashtra’s Kolhapur, Devendra Fadnavis, the state’s deputy chief minister, denounced the movement by asking, “Where do these sons of Aurangzeb come from?”
“Suddenly, in some districts of Maharashtra, sons of Aurangzeb took birth. They keep the status of Aurangzeb and show their posters. Because of this, there are tensions. Questions arise, where do these sons of Aurangzeb come from? Who are behind this? We will find this out,” said Fadnavis while talking to ANI in Nagpur.
Meanwhile, Maharashtra Chief Minister Eknath Shinde emphasized the government’s responsibility for maintaining law and order in the state and appealed to the public for peace and calm.
“The government is responsible for maintaining law and order in the state. I also appeal to the public for peace and calm. The Police investigation is underway and action will be taken against those found guilty…” said Maharashtra CM Eknath Shinde.
The Nationalist Congress Party’s (NCP) Ajit Pawar, the leader of the opposition in Maharashtra, has urged the administration to look into what led to the violence in Kolhapur. He voiced worry on the existing curfew-like circumstance and the deliberate attempts to undermine law and order. Pawar emphasised the need of the Chief Minister and the police figuring out what caused the clashes in the first place.
“There are rumours that the incidents are happening, keeping elections in mind. The government should keep a firm stand on knowing the reason behind the clashes,” Pawar said while talking to the reporters.
After a violent altercation between two parties on Wednesday, a curfew was put in place in Kolhapur, Maharashtra.
Conflicts started yesterday as a result of a “WhatsApp status” posted by three young people. To disperse the gathering and calm the situation down, police used lathi charges.
