Sanya, a city in Hainan, China, has chosen Zaha Hadid Architects to design its new harborside cultural district. This ambitious project covers 409,000 square meters and aims to become a vibrant hub for Sanya’s cultural activities. It will host a wide range of events, including performing arts, theater, exhibitions, conferences, and trade fairs. The design of the buildings gracefully transitions from the coastal waters of Sanya Bay to the cityscape. A central axis runs through the district, dividing the layered roofs, which create a sense of lightness and openness.
Situated at the harbor’s entrance, the district will be well-connected to Sanya’s transportation networks, including roads and trams. The central axis not only defines the layout but also separates spaces for performing arts and exhibitions on one side and commercial activities, like conferences and trade fairs, on the other. A public square between these facilities offers scenic harbor views.
The design draws inspiration from the movement of sails in the sea breeze, with layered roofs cascading from the central axis. Public terraces provide panoramic water views, and the plan includes public plazas, gardens, marinas, and a harborside boardwalk. The district also features city-center residences, hotels, and dining options.
Considering Hainan’s tropical climate with monsoons, the design prioritizes natural ventilation and sunlight. Sustainable strategies like photovoltaics, rainwater collection, and low-carbon construction are integrated. Smart building management, local materials, and timber cladding from sustainable sources further enhance the project’s sustainability.
